New George Lopez Talk Show Overplays Race Angle
TBS made TV history on Monday with the premiere of “Lopez Tonight,” a late-night talkfest with a Chicano host. And just in case you didn’t realize it, George Lopez hit you over the head with that information roughly every 90 seconds.
The new nightly show recognizes the changing demos of the U.S. population, a point Lopez punctuated with opening night guests Eva Longoria Parker, NBA star Kobe Bryant and music legend Carlos Santana (along with a near-cameo appearance by Ellen DeGeneres in bed clothes).
Ethnicity is the be all and end all in most of Lopez’s standup material — and the bulk of Monday night’s opening monologue — but it threatens to choke the life out of his talk show. It’s one thing to have a diverse guest list and quite another to hail every guest appearance as a testimonial to the concept.

Uganda: Experts Fear Population Explosion in Country

Ugandan’s current population is 31.2 million and the fertility rate s 6.7 children per woman. The population is expected to have doubled by 2037 to 88.8million.
Comparative fertility rates show that Uganda has the highest population growth rate compared to Kenya-(4.7), Tanzania-(5.7), Malawi-(6.0) and Rwanda-(6.1). Presenting the findings on international population and development-plan of action at Soroti Hotel, Seth Wabende, the administrator of the National Planning Authority, said: “The population will grow rapidly due to high fertility. However, it will grow slowly if fertility declines in the coming decades.”
According to a report from the Population secretariat, rapid population growth in rural areas hinders modernisation and has led to deforestation and land fragmentation.

Black Prof busted in Columbia gal ‘punch’
A prominent Columbia architecture professor punched a female university employee in the face at a Harlem bar during a heated argument about race relations, cops said yesterday.
Police busted Lionel McIntyre, 59, for assault yesterday after his bruised victim, Camille Davis, filed charges.
McIntyre and Davis, who works as a production manager in the school’s theater department, are both regulars at Toast, a popular university bar on Broadway and 125th Street, sources said.
The professor, who is black, had been engaged in a fiery discussion about “white privilege” with Davis, who is white, and another male regular, who is also white, Friday night at 10:30 when fists started flying, patrons said.

McIntyre, who is known as “Mac” at the bar, shoved Davis, and when the other patron and a bar employee tried to break it up, the prof slugged Davis in the face, witnesses said.
“The punch was so loud, the kitchen workers in the back heard it over all the noise,” bar back Richie Velez, 28, told The Post. “I was on my way over when he punched Camille and she fell on top of me.”
The other patron involved in the dispute said McIntyre then took a swing at him after he yelled, “You don’t hit a woman!”
“He knocked the glasses right off my face,” said the man, who would only give his first name as “Shannon.” “The punch came out of nowhere. Mac was talking to us about white privilege and what I was doing about it — apparently I wasn’t doing enough.”
McIntyre had squabbled with Davis several weeks earlier over issues involving race, witnesses said. As soon as the professor threw the punch Friday, server Rob Dalton and another employee tossed him out.
“It was a real sucker punch,” Dalton said. “Camille’s a great lady, always nice to everybody, and doesn’t deserve anything like this.”
Davis was spotted wearing sunglasses yesterday to conceal the black eye. Reached at her Columbia office, she declined to comment on the alleged attack.
McIntyre was released without bail at his arraignment last night.
“It was a very unfortunate event,” he said afterwards. “I didn’t mean for it to explode the way it did.”

In a case that raises questions about online journalism and privacy rights, the U.S. Department of Justice sent a formal request to an independent news site ordering it to provide details of all reader visits on a certain day.
The grand jury subpoena also required the Philadelphia-based Indymedia.us Web site “not to disclose the existence of this request” unless authorized by the Justice Department, a gag order that presents an unusual quandary for any news organization.
The Independent Media Center is a left-of-center amalgamation of journalists and advocates that – according to their principles of unity and mission statement – work toward “promoting social and economic justice” and “social change.”
The subpoena (PDF) from U.S. Attorney Tim Morrison in Indianapolis demanded “all IP traffic to and from www.indymedia.us” on June 25, 2008. It instructed Clair to “include IP addresses, times, and any other identifying information,” including e-mail addresses, physical addresses, registered accounts, and Indymedia readers’ Social Security Numbers, bank account numbers, credit card numbers, and so on.

State investigators seize computers, records while searching ACORN offices in New Orleans
An undercover state investigator removes computers from the ACORN offices in New Orleans, Friday, Nov. 6, 2009. A warrant was obtained to seize computers, hard drives and other documents after ACORN attorneys said two unidentified former employees took computers and other items when they left the organization.
NEW ORLEANS — State investigators raided ACORN offices on Friday, taking away computer hard drives and documents as part of a probe into alleged embezzlement and tax fraud when the organization’s national headquarters was based in New Orleans.
“This is an investigation of everything – ACORN, the national organization, the local organization and all of its affiliated entities, specifically as it relates to any potential violations of Louisiana law,” Assistant Attorney General David Caldwell said.
ACORN staff on the scene declined to comment, but an attorney for the group said in a statement the raid was prompted by allegations that former ACORN employees had removed or altered electronic documents and may do so in the future.
Attorney Pamela Marple said ACORN was cooperating and called the raid exhaustive, saying investigators wanted “virtually every document in the possession of ACORN and any related entity.”
The raid was the latest development for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now. Videotapes released recently showed ACORN employees offering tax advice to two people in Baltimore posing as a prostitute and her pimp. The videos led Congress and state governments to cut funding for ACORN.
State prosecutors said their probe into the New Orleans offices stemmed from allegations made last year by board members involving embezzlement at ACORN nearly a decade ago.

New Orleans “Recover Czar” Ed Blakely
After Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans hired a “Recovery Czar” at $475,000 a year. As you might expect in Ray Nagin’s “Chocolate City”, the job went to a black man, Ed Blakely. He’s no longer on the job, and a lot of folks in New Orleans seem to think they didn’t get much in return for his half million dollar salary. He was interviewed recently by a TV station in California and they discussed the city’s prospects for the future. Blakely painted a grim picture. And what’s the biggest problem New Orleans faces? Well, Blakely is a black man, so what would your first guess be? Yep. It’s racism. “Everybody’s racist”, he says. He also says that nearly 30 percent of city employees needed literacy training when he got there. That’s right; nearly one in three government employees couldn’t read, but “racism” is the biggest problem facing New Orleans.
While Blakely pointed out the many faults of the city, both environmentally and socially, he said he believes he was successful in streamlining the city’s bureaucracy, explaining that 20 people used to report to the mayor and now only five do. He said trimming 4,000 employees from city government’s workforce to 2,000 employees was beneficial to the city.
Saying that cities such Los Angeles and San Francisco has very sophisticated professional bureaucracies, according to him, nearly 30 percent of the city government staff needed literacy courses and many were under qualified for their jobs.
